Maybe I’m just not enough of a hipster, but the craze for authentic-looking reproductions of “vintage” baby diapers has left me out in the cold.
It was the ABU Super Dry Kids diaper that drew my attention to the phenomenon. Since then I’ve run into a couple of other companies (or their customers) gushing about diapers that look “just like” old Pampers, Huggies, etc.
Which to me begs the question: how many ABDLs out there actually remember what their childhood diapers looked like?
I certainly don’t. Maybe my early childhood memory is just unusually bad, but I have no visual memory of the diapers I wore as a baby. I don’t think most of them had any prints or decorations, but I might be making that up? It’s all honestly pretty vague.

Lifelong incontinents who went through all of childhood and adolescence diapered would of course have a different experience. But I had a good ten- to twenty-year gap in there where I wasn’t thinking about diapers much at all, and when they did re-enter my life it was as functional adult products rather than anything with baby associations.
So while I guess it’s kind of cool that people are making reproductions of classic diapers, I really am curious who the market is. How many of us that were infants in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s (the years most of these knock-offs seem to be based on) actually remember the visual appearance of the diapers we wore as infants?
I remember mine from when I was younger The old plastic backed pampers and luvs, I was small enough to wear them up to the largest size since I was incontinent but around 9 I had to switch to the old style white goodnites. Good to see you back Geoffrey!

I was born in 1980 & can remember my diapers were plastic backed & white with a blue waist bands but I also remember the ones that had giant alphabet blocks on them which vanished/faded once they were wet, I wore diapers from 1980-1983.
I remember the 1980s through1990s style pink Luvs and Huggies diapers for girls. I could barely fit them, so I used bed cover straps to help them fit me. The bed cover straps are just like the ends of a garter belt, and work wonderfully with a little sewing to shorten them. I still do this to this day since I bought a large quantity of the pink plastic-backed Luvs for girls anticipating that they wouldn’t make them after a while. A wise investment for many reasons 🙂

Has anyone tried the new always discreet under wear.they look just like pampers on the inside.they feel just like pampers baby dry.
Darren I take n cut the diapper tags off and staple them to the new diapper to lengthen the tags looks n wrks great

I wish someone would make a large adult sized replica of the pampers baby dry diapers from the early 1980’s as these where the ones I wore as a baby/toddler.
Either of the plain white ones or the magic alphabet block versions from 1981-1982.
I remember the Pampers baby dry from the early 80’s.
They had a really thick, really big toddler size that came in an orange box.
If I remember correctly they were for babies 37 to 42lbs and over.
At the age of 20 (I was very small), I could just barely fit into them.
They were the first time Pampers introduced leg gathers.
Yes I remember those as well I could still fit into those when I was about 8-9 yrs old.

I wear diapers mower days because I became incontinent in 2010, through no fault of my own just not Pampers or Huggies as they don’t make adult sized versions of their products.

I remember the huggies I wore to bed up till I was in Pre-School. 3 1/2 on was as punishment for misbehaving in Day Care. But even then I remember the pull-ups I wore too.
I wore diapers till almost 2nd grade, cause of my problems I had and I wasn’t potty-trained enough for big boy pants ( pull-ups).
I was in diapers fulltime until the summer before kindergarten and remember feeling a little sad having to give them up 24/7. Fortunately, I still wore diapers at night and during bouts of my IBS when I had accidents and my mom diapered me.
I do but that was because I had a younger sister and cousins as babies and when I was 4 my mom put me in one to keep the bed dry (just in case) at my grandma’s house when we were visiting (probably the star to my desire to wear). i have always had a weak bladder. What they need to do is copy the new style so they are easier to wear under clothes, quietly, (though I like to crinkle when home alone). And while I wear SDK sometimes, I don’t wear them for their look because I am a DL and not AB. I wear them because they fit better than some other plastic backed, but are still too big and I like their slickness. I am in between large and medium. Only diaper that actually fits me perfectly are the unique wellness but I only wear those for when I know I might not make it to the bathroom and I am on the highway. Not too happy with their sagging when wet. Anyway! I wish they were cheaper!
O goodness, Hipster Adult Babies! Adrian, what did you start here? As a 90’s baby, like you said, I do not remember what old diapers look like. I can only assume that as society grows, the products and quality of those products is cheapening. I think It’s a security thing because “things were better in the old days.” Diapers were thicker and presumably cuter back then. I love the look of the AB cushies, but they do not function well and are expensive.
Wait, I thought you were incontinent your whole life. i am confused. Do you not remember what diapers you wore in high school or your middle school years and adolescents? What do you mean by re entering your life?
Anyway i remember the ones i did wear as a toddler, they were plain white and my parents said I wore Pampers. I do not remember wearing cloth at all. I was an infant when they used them on me. I do not remember what I wore during potty training.

Doh, I really have to pay more attention to who posts what since both of you share this blog.
I would have to say that SDK and Cushies are my favorite and they sell them in my home town. The prices are fair because I dont pay shipping. But I would say that as for baby looks, they do just fine. The only complaint is that the baby smell isnt what I remember.
That’s one thing I vividly remember from my childhood was the baby scents from the old plastic backed diapers, I loved those scents.
I Love the old baby scented diapers, can’t get enough of that smell, i’m in heaven when I get a whiff of the smell.
I remember Pampers had a scent that was like a lure for me. I used to buy the night time Pampers which were much thicker and tape 3 or 4 together so I had a Pampers diaper my size. I reveled in the feeling of the thickness and babyish smell as I posed in front of the mirror. The tape maybe detracted a bit from the overall effect but not much because when I wet my Pamper it released that Babyish fragrance and sort of put me in a Heavenly trance as the whole feeling of being a Baby again overwhelmed all of my senses. Geez wiz I miss that smell.
I do remember my childhood diapers because I wore them 24/7 until the age of 6 and periodically after that when my IBS flared up until I had better control. I remember wearing all white pampers in the early 1970s in addition to cloth diapers with plastic pants. My attachment to diapers is best fulfilled with diapers that look like the old style pampers I was kept in as a kid. I remember the distinct crinkle, smell and look of my pampers and often wore them around the house in full view. I remember looking at my diapers in the mirror and feeling security, comfortable and extra special. I like the all white bambino diapers today to brewing me back to my childhood days where life was much easier and tranquil. I get the whole vintage diaper craze and enjoy going back to my youth. There were some downsides to being diaper depend as an older child, but the extra attention and feeling of security being in my pampers have been with me for a lifetime.

I love being in my diapers now as an adult to rekindle all those feelings I had as a pampered little boy.
I don’t remember the diapers I wore, but I remember the thick cloth underwear “training pants.” I am partial to thick plastic backed disposables because I’m the oldest of 5 kids and two cousins so there were diapers around for many years. When everyone was out of diapers, I remember going around and collecting the extra ones left in car trunks as backups and hiding them away. At one point I sewed a couple into an old pair of underwear but failed to account for the elastics so it didn’t really work. I went to taping the tapes of two onto my skin, one in front, one in back and taping them together between my legs with masking tape. I didn’t buy real adult diapers until some years later when I could drive.
I don’t remember the diapers I wore as a toddler. Nor do i care for the diapers in the picture. They need to have elastic waist band for better leak protection.
True, diapers do need better elastic leg and waist bands. but I still like the diaper pics.

I remember those 1970’s diapers well, Pampers, Luvs, Huggies. Those vintage plastic backed diapers are cool, and yet hard to find. Ebay sells them, but the bidding usually goes up hundreds of dollars. A real eye opener to get an idea on how good they really were, is any scene of a movie or tv show in a supermarket or toystore of the 1970’s-1980’s where someone has to go out and get diapers, but don’t know anything about caring for a baby.
My first childhood memory of wearing diapers came when I put on a diaper from one of my sister’s Cabbage Patch Dolls! It had little Cabbage Patch Dolls printed all over it and it was just a plain rectangular-shaped diaper with one tape on either side. No leak guards, just a lot of plastic and cute yellowish plastic diaper! I was 4-yrs-old at the time, born in 1979!
i don’t remember the diapers I wore but I do have a vivid memory of how soft they felt and how thick they were. That is what attracted me to them I am sure. I have seen the old commercials on YouTube and I can only guess that is what I was wearing!
I remember it was Pampers I wore. One of my earliest memories was when I was about 4 and my brother was still in diapers. One of the neighborhood girls was over at our house and we began to play with my brother’s Pampers. Pampers have always been my favorite diapers (especially the old plastic thick ones). As others have mentioned the baby powder like scent draws me to them.

I was born in the 90s. I have a visual memory of diapers from when I was barely out of diapers, and they’re the diapers used by the same kindergarten I went to when I was in diapers. They were plain white disposables, with a contrasting-colour picture tape at hip level. I had a brief relapse from toilet training at about six years of age, but I don’t remember if they put me back into those same diapers.
I remember checking out a vintage looking “retro” diaper. I was at Harborview Medical Center here in Seattle visiting my older brother who had been injured in a car driving accident. I needed a diaper change, and didn’t have any diapers on me. So I asked one of the nurses if they had any adult diapers “briefs” that I could use. I told them my situation, that I was totally urinary incontinent, and needed to wear diapers, but that I had wet my diapers and needed some clean diapers. The nurse was understanding and got me some adult diapers. I don’t know what the brand name was. It looked just like what Adrian is wearing in the photo, without the prints and patterns. It was blue in colour, if I remember. It had only one set of tapes, instead of two or three, like most adult diapers. I tried it on, and it fit quite comfortably. Unfortunately, she only gave me that one diaper. But I wore it, and used it. It worked quite well. It didn’t leak or anything. I’d buy some more of such diapers if I knew where they could be bought. 🙂

This was several years ago, probably 2008, when I acquired them.
Call me old-school, but I like these “retro” style diapers from the 70s and 80s. When the nurse at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle let me the diapers, it had only one set of tapes, instead of the typical two or three. I find it easier to fasten one set of big tapes than it is to fasten two, or three sets of smaller tapes. How well the tapes stay fastened usually depends on how strong the tapes are, and how well the tape landing zone is. I was able to walk around wearing the diapers without the tapes coming undone, but I was also able to unfasten the tapes when I was finished using them.
I agree with you there it is a lot easier dealing with just one set of tapes heck it’s easy with two sets of tapes as well but three in some cases is to much. So far I’ve seen that Both ABU Cushies and Super Dry Kids have very strong tapes which is very good you don’t have to worry about them coming off while your out and about.
If only such diapers were sold in stores, rather than online. I know that many people prefer buying online, and that’s fine. But I’d rather go to the store, and buy it, and have the package in my hand. I remember these diapers were blue in colour. The outer barrier was crinkly plastic. It looked like the baby diaper you and I remember 30-40 yrs ago, except it was bigger, to fit an adult. 🙂
This one is easy for me since I was born in the late 50s. I was raised in cloth diapers and still prefer cloth today.
I was born in the 70s, 1973, if you want to be exact, when baby diapers had only one set of adhesive tapes and were made of a plastic-like outer cover. Baby diapers still have only one set of fasteners, but are made of a cloth-like cover.
I wore cloth diapers when I was an infant until about 2 yrs old, from there until I was about 5 or 6, I’d wear cloth training pants.
I didn’t realize I had a latent desire to wear diapers until four years ago when I began to lose control and wet my pants, only slightly but enough to know I needed protection. Long story short, I depend on diapers at night to get me thru without having to get up to pee. Now I look forward to “diapering up” before I go to sleep and to the comforting wetting I can do without wetting anything but my diaper. No AB diapers, just wonderfully absorbent diapers that I can soak but rely upon not to leak. So, here’s a toast to great diapers, plain or printed, and the comforts they bring! Wet on!
I remember wearing blue disposable diapers… And I remember the boy my mom babysat wore diapers that had pigs or bears or something like that. The only reason I remember is because I was about 4 years old, getting changed into my night diaper and I asked for the other kid’s diaper instead, but was told they were too small.
I was born in 1989, and while I don’t remember my own diapers, I do remember my neice’s. She was in diapers from when I was about 8 until 11, which was right around when my fascination for them started. These are the diapers I ‘grew up with’ I guess, mid 90’s diapers, and they’re the type I tend to gravitate toward. They don’t have to be ‘replicas’, but anything that’s plain white with a cute strip of printed tape on the front will win my heart. I like Cushies and the lot, too, but will always go for the Bambinos.
For me, wearing diapers is not about style or about being an AB or DL. It’s more about comfort, convenience, and security.

The more we use diapers and more reasons we have helps us understand that diapers are not embarrassing, weird or inappropriate.

I agree. 🙂 I never wore diapers when I was in school. Like many children, I was expected to hold on until I made it to the toilet before peeing or pooping. Generally, if a child had an accident, they were “threatened” with being put back into diapers. If I had to wear diapers, I probably wouldn’t have minded, but being mocked and threatened with being put back in diapers, no thanks.
If your parents put you back into diapers when you were a child would you have liked it Jason?
They never put me back in diapers, although looking back on it, I wish they had.

Jason, Sofia and the gang: I’m a DL but not an AB. I’m wearing diapers more frequently during the day, and as unobtrusive as the Tena Maxi Stretch is, I’m looking for a diaper that is more “low cut,” sort of like a bikini, but a little larger, with single adhesive strips. I want a plain white, non-crinkly diaper. Any suggestions?
I’ve never considered myself an AB. I would willingly wear cloth diapers, plastic pants, onesies. But try as I might, sucking on a pacifier, babbling like an infant, playing with baby toys, etc. aren’t my thing. I couldn’t be a baby. I haven’t been a baby since I was a baby. I’m more of a little boy, between the age of 4 yrs and 7 yrs. who can talk with understandable vocabulary, who can say “hey! My nappy is wet, or poopy!” but still needs to wear diapers, because my bladder control isn’t as developed as the rest of my body. I live in Tacoma, Washington, and would love to find a daddy to diaper me and to take care of me like a little boy.

For me Im both an AB and DL so I do play with all kinds of toys and I do sometimes dress up like a little girl.
But as Adrian said diapers are the best babyish thing because I sure do love my Bambino Bellissimo Diapers as well as other diapers to. 🙂
Hey Sofia. I agree. Diapers are the best babyish thing there is. I’ve had people ask me why I like diapers, and I’ve told them that it’s difficult to explain. I don’t expect them to understand, or even to try. It’d just drive them crazy. It drives me crazy trying to explain.

I haven’t told anyone. Even if I could tell, and they would understand, I refuse to take the chance of them laughing or trying to humiliate me over it.

I do have a vague memory of the diapers I wore as a child, i was around three years old (1974). I can remember waking up wet and going to my parents room and asking my mom to change me. My mom told me she would help me get dressed,. but that I was wearing big boy underwear during the day now. I can still remember being mad about that, but not being able to articulate why.
Now with all that said, those are not the diapers I want to wear now. No my ideal diapers are the ones that were out in the mid to late 80s. I always wanted to wear diapers again as a child, but once puberty hit it became an obsession. So I remember all of the diapers and their commercials from that time period real well.
A lot of folks here have love for Pampers, but me I’m a Huggies guy. I want the Huggies from right before they started trimming them down. The last of the thick ones, they had just introduced waistbands and standing leak guards, they had started to put SAP in the diapers, but had yet to try trimming them down. Bambino Bianco’s come close to that for me, The only thing that keeps them from being perfect, is that the padding doesn’t go 100% into the wings.
I don’t remember what diapers I wore when I was a baby, but like most people my age, I must’ve worn cloth diapers and plastic pants.
I don’t remember the diapers i wore either. However, I do remember the type that were around when I first developed my fetish. This was around age 10 or so. Which would be around late 80’s. Those diapers are what sticks in my mind as a diaper. Not cloth with plastic pants, not cloth like covers, but white plastic backed with cute pictures on the landing zone. We latch on to things from when things initiate.
I wore cloth diapers and plastic pants, and I sure do remember them. I got stuck with a diaper pin a few times. Then I remember making friends with a couple of brothers who had a little sister when I was six years old. She wore the really old style Pampers (back in the 1970s) and also cloth diapers and Gerber plastic pants. We would wear the plastic pants and wear the cloth diapers and plastic pants too. Oddly enough, their mom was okay with this. She thought it was cute and would sometimes diaper us. Truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and we sure had fun!
I recently was trawling through the internet and found out someone was dismissive about wither or not the 1980’s pampers baby dry diapers ever had the so called magic blocks design as in the giant magical alphabet blocks which would disappear when wet, he called it a myth.
I seem to remember they did exist and for lack of words where around in cirria 1981-1983 as I remember wearing them as they where the last diapers I wore before I was potty trained excluding the ones I wear nowadays of cause due to disabilities and other factors, can anyone tell me am I just imagining them or did they as i suspect really exist?.
And if so why did pampers abandon this novel design as it clearly was way ahead of it’s time and would have been popular nowadays as much as it was back then when I was a child growing up in the Cayman islands in the carribian, I know at that time all diapers where plastic backed and felt much more thicker and larger in size than the ones on the market shelves in todays world.
I would of cause like to wear these again but I know that would be impossible unless someone was to reproduce them in a adult size, and for a reasonable price that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg so to speak of.
My own experience with diapers started in 1980, when I was born but I do remember being a baby and the joyfull feeling of wearing diapers all the time as it was one of the happiest times in my life, I can remember unlike what you may have heard on scientific America my early childhood years.
I have an almost photographic long term memory because I am autistic and it’s just one of my gifts I was blessed and cursed with and like Adrian surley like to wear diapers and make the most of my life now that its changed beyond what I could have thought 5-6 years before I experienced a weak bladder and had to become diapered up for only the 2nd time in my life in 2010 which made me forced to be in them virtually 24/7, Just like the baby/toddler I once was all those years ago.

Yes, I may be an exception to remembering my baby pants. Before my Mother passed a few years ago, I asked her about my memories. She said they were perfect. My Mommy would bathe me and lay out my thick cloth diapers on the floor and pin them on me, holding the pins in her lips. Then she would have me stand up and step into my Gerber white plastic pants. This went on for YEARS until my new baby sister came along, and this all suddenly stopped for me. I was told I was no longer the baby of the family. Mom said I ran to my room and cried for hours. Very true memories, but you know I can’t remember all about yesterday! Thank you for letting me relive these memories. It is a good coping mechanism for me.
The only real baby diapers I remember were the ones my friends were wearing at the time, and they usually had balloons on them
I haven’t worn baby diapers since I was a baby. At the time, we wore cloth diapers and plastic pants. As I grew older, and bigger, I “graduated” to bigger diapers. By the time I was in my teens, they didn’t have cloth diapers that would fit my growing body. I prefer cloth diapers and training pants than the store bought diapers and pull-on “protective underwear”.
I’d wear diapers 24/7 if I had someone to help diaper me.
I was born in 1957 and would not wear diapers if I couldn’t wear cloth. I also love a roomy women’s cotton brief, like a training panty. Just love that “all enveloping” feeling I get, just like when I have a thick cloth diaper on with a pair of plastic baby panties.
I was blown back when I saw the Super Dry Kids diapers — those were the EXACT pair of diapers I last wore as a child and seeing them caused me to remember it clearly. My mom had run out of pull-ups and had to use a diaper. I remember thinking it felt much nicer than the pull-ups because it was snugger and thicker. Then I used the diaper, which made my mom REALLY mad. “We’re not putting you in diapers again,” she said as she cleaned me. “You’re going to have to hold it like everyone else. You’re getting too big for this.” So my tiny 2 year old mind made sure in that moment to capture every detail of the diaper changing as it would be my last experience with it and I always enjoyed getting changed.
I’ve never understood why parents make their children go without wearing diapers, forcing them to hold until it’s painfully uncomfortable, or they make it to the toilet. I’ve never understood why parents have a big problem with children wearing diapers.

I am female and was adopted when i was 14 and my new parents imediately put me in the size 6 pampers and plastic pants 24/7 back in 1984.I was having accidents and wetting the bed some so the pampers and plastic pants made sense.I stopped having the accidents and bedwetting at 15 and a half,but my parents kept me in the pampers and plastic pants for another year to protect me from boys
As a child of the sixties, my first diapers were cloth with pins and plastic pants. I still enjoy those, but I’ve come to enjoy disposables more. When Bambinos came out, I did not go for them. I was not and am not an adult baby. However, when ABU introduced their diapers I gave them a try and was hooked. Besides being cute, they functioned way better than Depends (they dependably leaked). Since ABDL diapers have become a big and growing business, the offerings have consistently expanded and improved. Tykables, Rearz, etc., have gone way beyond “vintage” looks. These diapers are in a class of their own and designed to have a special appeal to an increasing number of diaper lovers. It is great to have so many choices. It is even better to realize that there are more of us out there than we may have ever suspected. I accepted my longing and tried adult diapers before I had the internet. I thought I was very alone. Its nice to know better.
I was born in 1956 and wore the cloth diapers and plastic pants as a baby.Then when i was 7.mom put the cloth diapers and rubberpants on me again under my First communion dress as they were the normal under wear worn under the dresses.When i was 11,i was the flower girl in my sisters wedding and of course mom diapered me under my flower girl dress.Then at 14 i was confirmed and had to wear the poofy white dress and veil with lace socks and white mary jane shoes and mom again put the diapers and rubberpants on me under the dress.I lucked out as i found out there were a few other girls in my class with the cloth diapers and rubberpants on under their dresses also.
To Julie-Me and my twin sister were born in the middle 50s also and we wore the cloth diapers and rubberpants also.We were potty trained at age three and then when sis and i turned 12,both of us started puberty and started wetting the bed.Our mom put us back into the cloth pin on diapers and the rubberpants at night.We wore the Playtex toddler-extra large size rubberpants as well as the Empire brand in the extra large super size and the Woolworths super size and also the Gerber toddler size.Every night at bedtime,sis and i laid side by side and mom powdered us and pinned on the diapers,then put the rubberpants on over them.We had the rubberpants in pastel colors as well as babyprints.Like you,mom diapered sis and i for a couple weddings we were in and also for Easter sunday.Our bedwetting lasted untill we were well past 14 and it was rough being teenagers and having to wear diapers and rubberpants to bed every night!
Growing up it was very common to see bedwetters wearing diapers and plastic or rubber pants as they are sometimes called. I can remember having friends who either were bedwetters or had bedwetters in their families. One of my friends both her and her brother were bedwetters and so they had to wear cloth diapers and rubber pants to bed each night. I often saw her brother dressed for bed and could hear his rubber pants make noise when he moved. Once when my parents were called away suddenly I stayed at my friends house and slept in her room in my sleeping bag. I could see her diapers and rubber pants bulge under her night gown and could hear the noise they made when she was laying in bed. In the warm weather her brother would often go to bed with just diapers and rubber pants on. I would look closely when this happened as I never saw older kids with diapers and rubber pants on.
To kim-I was a bedwetter going thru puberty,having started just past my 12th birthday,and was put into the cloth pin on diapers and rubberpants right away.It was a routine every night,i would lay on my bed,mom would slide the diapers under me,apply the babypowder,bring the diapers up and pin them,then pull the rubberpants up my legs and over the diapers! My rubberpants were super large size or toddler large size and since i was still somewhat of a ‘little girl’ yet,i wore the rubberpants in pink,yellow and blue and some with nursery prints on them.I had sleepovers and went to slumber parties and it was very common for the bedwetting girls in puberty to have their cloth diapers,rubberpants,diaper pins,babypowder,etc in their overnight suit cases.My bedwetting lasted untill i was almost 15 and the last slumber party i went to then,there were 11 of us girls there and all of us were 14 and 6 of us all had our diapers and rubberpants on!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s and the cloth diapers and toddler or super large size rubberpants were worn by kids for bedwetting and special occasions.I myself was a bedwetter from ages 12 to past 15 and wore the cloth pin on diapers and the super large size rubberpants over them.I had a few girlfriends who were also bedwetters and we would have slumber parties and all of us would be in our cloth diapers and rubberpants at the same time! It wasnt uncommon to see girls in pastel and babyprint rubberpants over our diapers and we wore our rubberpants under our Easter dresses on easter sunday and also with the diapers under them when we were in weddings.For our confirmations at 14 in eighth grade,we had to wear the poofy white short sleeve,knee length dresses with the veil,white tights and white mary jane shoes and me and most of the girls in my class wore the cloth diapers and white rubberpants under our tights per our parents requirement.The rubberpants were also worn under one and two piece swim suits at the beech.
i guess i am the old one here. grew up in the 50s had very thick cloth diapers and plastic pants . back then most homes had diapers hanging on clothes lines. it was the time where you could see wet sheets hanging out some windows. it was just the time it was back then, so there is what i still wear today.
I was born in the mid 50s and had cloth diapers on all the time because of medical problems.
I wore cloth diapers and plastic pants or rubber pants as they were more commonly called. I wet the bed regularly between the ages of 5 and 11. Up until the age of 8 mom would put me in a double diaper and rubber pants for bed. At age 8 I was taught how to do it myself which I did for 3 more ears. Ae first I hated having them on and than as time went by I decided it was better than waking up in a wet bed. They were really not so bad.
I am sure it depends on what you are used to and grew up wearing. I wore both cloth diapers and plastic pants, as well as pampers as a child. I too was a bedwetter and wore diapers at night until about the same age. My mom always diapered me after my evening bath. It was double cloth and plastic pants at night and pampers during the day. I wore diapers fulltime until I was 5 and a half because I had lots of accidents and difficulty potty training. It was the early 1970s and pampers were becoming more,popular. The daycare I attended used them and my mom discovered the convenience of disposable diapers and switched me into pampers for daytime use. I like the all white, plastic crinkly diapers today – they remind me of vintage pampers.
I was never a wetter growing up,but my two sisters were bedwetters going thru puberty and they both wore the cloth pin on diapers with super large size baby rubberpants over them to bed every night.They were twins and both started puberty just past 12 and wore the diapers and rubberpants untill they were just past 15.Every night,they would lay side by side on the bed and mom would rub baby lotion on them then babypowder them then pin the diapers on them,then put the rubberpants on over the diapers.They would come out smelling like babies and their bulge under their pjs was quite noticable! They even had rubberpants in pastel colors and some with babyprints on them and during the summer months,they would wear their pj top and have their diapers and babyprint rubberpants on and both of them would look like babies.They both stopped their bedwetting just past 15 and that was the last time i saw them in their diapers and rubberpants.
Back in the late 70’s early 80’s using cloth diapers and rubber on babies and bedwetters was pretty normal. Being the neighborhood babysitter I sat for several families in the area. Getting younger ones ready for bed was usually just changing them into a dry diaper and clean rubber pants. For the bedwetters it was more involved. Most bedwetters did not want a babysitter to put their diapers on and tried to fight it when it was time to get ready for bed. They would resist having to take if their underwear and lie down on the bed to be diapered. Sometimes it took a lot of talking to get them to do it. Sometimes it became necessary to spank them to get them dressed for bed and yet some others would help you get things ready by bringing the diapers and rubber pants to you or some would fold their diapers and lay down in them and many of them once diapered would pull on their own rubber pants. Mostly I knew the kids I sat for well enough so that I was prepared for their diapering’s.
I grew up in the late 50s and early 60s also and cloth diapers and rubberpants were very common back then for bedwetting,special occassions,etc.We are catholic and at the parish we belonged to back then,when preteen and teen girls were baptized at Easter vigil or in group baptisms,they all wore the traditional white short sleeve,midthigh length baptism dresses with the matching bonnet,lace anklets and the white mary jane shoes.The cloth diapers,rubberpants and white undershirt were the normal underwear worn under the dresses.When the girls were either picked up and held or bent over to recieve the water on their heads,their diapers and rubberpants could be easily seen.The rubberpants were usually white,but some parents would do nursery print rubberpants over their daughters diapers so they would look cuter.The diapers and rubberpants and undershirts were also worn under the First Communion dresses as well and when i made my First Communion at age 10,mom put the diapers and rubberpants on me as well.Many girls wore the cloth diapers and rubberpants on easter under their easter dresses and also in weddings as flower girls and junior bridesmaids.I had a few friends who were in weddings between the ages of 12 and 15 and remember seeing them in their diapers and rubberpants when they were being dressed.Our parish did confirmation at 14 and just like for First Communion,we had to wear the white poofy dresses and veils with the lace socks and white mary janes.The diapers and rubberpants and undershirt were required under the dresses also.The rubberpants i had over my diapers were new and not stretched as much and the elastic leg openings dug into my leg joints! Now that we are all parents,the parish and the parents keep the tradition alive to this day and the girls all wear the cloth diapers and rubberpants under their white dresses just like their moms did back then!
Back in the 60s and 70s there were several makers of rubberpants that actually stretched out enough to fit preteens and teens.The Gerber toddler size-35 pounds were one of the brands that kids wore along with the Playtex milky white Toddler extra large size that were a higher waist rubberpant.The Empire brand extra large super size rubberpants were about the largest size on the market and were worn by preteen and teen girls under their Easter dresses as well as their First Communion,flowergirl,and white confirmation dresses.I had a friend,Dianne,who wore the empire rubberpants when she was dating her fiance and he liked having her wear them.
Back in the early 1990s when i was 13,i started bedwetting and my parents had me wear the Gerber flat cloth diapers in the 24×27 inch size that were pinned on me with diaper pins.Mom got the Comco adult size plastic pants in medium that fit me blousy that i wore over the diapers.I also had the ‘SOFT AND sILENT’ plastic pants made by a company in Michagan.Mom made me wear those over my diapers for Easter and christmas under my dresses.
